Planting Instructions for Trees and Shrubs

First find an appropriate location for the plant by referring to its tag.  Dig a hole twice the diameter of the pot or balled and burlapped root ball.  The hole should be several inches deeper than the height of the root ball.

Next add some of the bagged planting mix (manure, compost, or complete planting mix) into the bottom of the hole and mix with the soil in the ground.  Carefully place the root ball into the hole and make sure that the top of it is at ground level or up to two inches above ground level.   Do not allow the root ball to break apart.

If the shrub is pot bound, meaning that there is a mass of roots and not much soil in the root ball, then slice vertical lines along the bundle of knotted roots from top to bottom.  Five or six lines an inch or two into the root ball will suffice.

With the plant in the hole, fill the hole with water.  Check to make sure that the root ball is still even or above ground level and not deeper.

Back fill the hole with the soil mix after the water has drained from the hole.  Create a raised circle around the shrub with soil to create a moat.  This will prevent water from running away in subsequent waterings.  Water several times a week during summer months and once a week in spring and fall. The following year water on dry, hot days.
